2011
“This was an exceptional vintage for our Sangiovese vines which did not suffer the long period of drought that led up to the harvest because their long roots dig down deep to reach the water in the soil. In fact, this may very well be a “Riserva Grandi Annate” vintage.” Virginie Saverys, owner
Our 2011 vintage will be remembered as the year we introduced organic and biodynamic farming methods across the estate, thereby creating the healthiest possible habitat for our vines. The long, hot summer meant we had an early harvest, but thanks to the dedicated work of our experienced pickers and careful grape selection before vinification, we were able to bring ripe, well-balanced grapes to the cellars.
2010
“This was my first vintage at Avignonesi. I found a dedicated team in place, people that were willing to learn new skills and follow me as I began to prepare our vineyards for the conversion to organic farming”. Laura Lenzi, agronomist
This was the first vintage that owner Virginie Saverys could truly call her own, and it was not an easy one. The highly changeable weather with constant temperature swings, hot days, damp mornings and sporadic showers meant that only the most skilled viticulturists, who were willing to dedicate many work hours to keeping the growing habitat healthy for the vines, could bring in healthy, ripe fruit.

“There is no shortcut to quality” Virginie Saverys
In her first year in charge, Virginie Saverys made the bold decision not to produce any Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This was a blessing in disguise for our junior flagship wine, Rosso di Montepulciano, which benefited from all the best Sangiovese parcels and produced an elegant and noteworthy wine.
