Desiderio Toscana IGT Merlot 2020

Desiderio

Toscana I.G.T. Merlot

Desiderio was a bull which lived on Avignonesi’s Capezzine farm more than one hundred years ago. The largest bull in Tuscany at that time, this majestic animal helped define the Chianina cattle race, specific to the Bistecca Fiorentina. It came as a natural choice to dedicate this Merlot to the beloved bull as a testimony to the wines’ origin. This is Merlot from Tuscany at its best.

The iconic white bull is today an illustration of the vintage. There is more to the label than meets the eyes. Compare them with each other, and you will notice a few clues about the climate. Look at the sky, and you will understand whether it was cold, hot, or balanced and you can decipher many other hints.
On the label next to our bull Desiderio, there is also a small kangaroo, to remember our winemaker Ashleigh Seymour. After being part of our team for many years, she decided to return to her birth country Australia to embark on new adventures.

Explosive olfactory impact. The wide aromatic bouquet ranges from cherry and plum jam to notes of black tea, rhubarb, and graphite, and final touches of cardamom. The entrance is bursting. On the palate it is enveloping and deep, accompanied by a silky and linear tannin typical of the structure of Tuscan Merlot. Tastefully juicy and in symbiosis with the olfactory notes, it gives notes of coconut and black pepper in the aftertaste.

2019 was also a great year for our family. Desiderio is proud to wear a pink bow on the 2019 label to celebrate the birth of Virginie’s first granddaughter, Ophélie. In addition, Desiderio is more robust than usual, due to the abundant bunches that have filled our vineyards.

The sediments you might find in this wine show that it is made of pure Sangiovese with minimal intervention. The deposit is due to its high content of a natural antioxidant called quercetin, which is perfectly safe. This is not a flaw, it is a characteristic of the pure Sangiovese.
