Il Marzocco, symbol of the Florentine Republic, is a stone lion which stands on a column in front of Palazzo Avignonesi in the town of Montepulciano. A heraldic sign of wisdom and strength, this majestic lion lent its name to the Avignonesi Chardonnay in 1987 when the winery, one of the first in the area, started producing a barrel-aged white wine.
